Translating to success: A personal account

Learning a new language is as much about personal planning and organisational skills as it is memorising conjugations, pronunciations and all those tricky grammatical rules and their exceptions. It’s one thing to learn a language as a hobby in your spare time in a non-native-speaking context, but what happens when you find yourself in a foreign situation where learning the language is essential to your career and life progress?
This just comes to mind in regards to an Estonian girl that I met in Paris some years ago. Well-travelled and making a career for herself in Estonian to English translation and Lithuanian to English translation in Tallinn, Vilnius and London, she had only just arrived in Paris with her French partner and was trying to get herself professionally set-up in the city. The only problem, for the first time in her life, was language. She had previously been able to get work everywhere she went with her linguistic ability that spanned Estonian, Lithuanian, Russian and English, but she couldn’t find a way for this to work for her without a comprehensive knowledge of French.
This initial stage of integration was the hardest for her, she admits freely now, as a dedicated pursuit of the French language has now reaped appropriate rewards. Thanks to a process of motivation, organisation and inspiration, she was able to learn French to the point of fluency and is now not only employed in making French translations of Estonian and Lithuanian documents, but is also creating English to French translation and French to English translation. If you had met her a few years earlier during the despondent and down outset, you would never believe this transformation! It just goes to prove that anything is possible when you put your mind to it!
